Media Audiences: What techniques does the opening sequence use to appeal to a weekday mainstream audience?

The opening sequence may appeal to a mainstream audience because the first character that is introduced is a young girl who looks innocent and lonely this automatically causes enigma codes for the viewer as to who is she? why is she right at the beginning? it causes mystery right at the beginning of the sequence which allows the audience to get hooked and engaged to it straightaway. the sequence also consists of non diegetic music right in the beginning which goes with the action that is occuring as it is quite eerie and the fact that they have used a slow motion pace music goes with the action that is occuring with the image. high key lighting is also used throughout the beginning as it portrays more suspense for the viewers. A very wide audience is expected to watch this drama as it straightaway contains a lot of suspense and it is very gripping for the audience to watch.

Media Forms: How does the extract follow the codes and convention of an opening sequence?

it follows the typical codes and convention of an opening sequence as it straight away creates a lot of enigma codes in the mind of the viewers and this is shown by the non diegetic music and the fact that there is a girl at the beginning. there is a child playing which is then followed a woman conducting normal everyday life chores. the sequence also uses high key lighting in the opening to emphasise the situation that is occuring. the music is also soundbridged from the beginning to the end which links on the narrative and keeps the flow of the sequence. furthermore there is a lot of use of slow motion which adds to the suspense and the fact that it could foreshadow events to occur etc.

Media Representation: How are people and places represented in this opening sequence?

using normal characters adds to the realism of the storyline. for example having a girl at the beginning playing is what you expect little girls to do. furthermore by the woman doing chores is like a everyday thing you expect. most of the action occurs in the home which also allows the audience to interact with the characters as well as what is hapenning in the sequence. from what is being shown you can assume that they could be a nuclear family where once again the audience can interact with day to day situations.

[[ C L A M P S ]]
. . . C o s t u m e . . .
In terms of 50Cent's costume he's wearing white which connotes purity however have girls who are wearing barely any clothes therefore this shows the representation of women within this video. They are reprensented more or less being there for mens' satisfaction as two girls are shown on leads. 50Cent is also wearing a cap which could be stereotypical as he is from a black background futhermore he is wearing a lot of jewelry which portrays his wealth.
. . . L i g h t i n g . . .
At the beginning of this video high key lighting is used which connotes purity once again and this is emphasised by the colour of clothing. Although purity is being shown it contrasts with what is actually shown in the video in terms of the action of women their costume etc. Roughly 1 minute into the video you get low key lighting which connotes negativity however you do not get negativity in this film. The low key lighting is mainly used at night time which connotes racketering and stereotypes what they may get upto.

This video is targeted at those who are into hip hop music however through the representation of women etc it can be said that this video is targeted at men/teenage boys as this video is mainly male dominated. It would target teenage boys aged about 14 onwards and males aged around 24+. Therefore men can be the primary audience for this music video.
. . . M a k e - U p . . .
In terms of the males in this video they are not wearing any make up however in total contrast the females are wearing loads of make up. This shows how females are being represented in this video - they are seen as being there as sexual objects and this is clearly shown by the amount of make up that they are wearing furthermore through their costumes as they are hardly wearing any clothes.
. . . P R O P S . . .
At the beginning of the video 50 Cent is holding a white ipod which portrays his wealth perhaps and also goes with the white theme that they have used in this video. The other main props that are in this video is the jewellry that they are all wearing. Cars are also used as props and the cars that are used are very expensive cars which once again shows the wealth. Furthermore, leads are used which are put around 2 females this shows how women are being compared to with animals and how they are being represented.
. . . S E T T I N G . . .
The main setting for this is in an mansion which once again connotes the wealth of these individuals. Furthermore, as they are not shown to have any jobs etc then it could show that they are getting their money illegally which is very stereotypical of black ethnic minority groups.
